BOGO Promotions

BOGO stands for Buy One, Get One but using Prism Promotions, you can go beyond the traditional BOGO. For example, you can specify multiple items, quantities and prices for both the Buy One and Get One parts of the promotion (e.g. "Buy Two, get Three" or "Buy Five, Get One"). In a typical BOGO promotion, both the "Buy" items and the "Get" items are listed on the transaction. The Buy items are the items that, when purchased, will trigger the promotion. When the promotion is applied, the discount amount or percentage that you specify is applied to the "Get" items - the items specified in the Reward Rules Item Filter.
When making a BOGO promotion, you need to select:

  • The items and quantities that constitute the "Buy One" portion of the BOGO. These are the items that, when purchased, will trigger the promotion.
  • The items, quantities, and prices that will be rewarded as the "Get One" portion of the BOGO.

Validation Rules for BOGOs
When setting up a BOGO promotion, the Validation Rules determine the "Buy Items". For a BOGO, you will typically define a filter for the Sale Items and specify the Item Quantity that must be bought to trigger the promotion. Other options are also available for the Validation Rules. Refer to the following table:

Option Description
Sale Items Click the Item Filter button to define filter criteria. If an item matching the entered criteria is listed on the receipt, the rule is validated.
Item Quantity Enter the quantity that is required to validate the rule.
Item Subtotal Click the Item Subtotal checkbox and enter an item subtotal. If the item subtotal meets or exceeds the entered value, the rule is validated.
Sale Subtotal Click the Sale Subtotal checkbox and enter a subtotal amount. If the subtotal meets or exceeds the entered value, the rule is validated.
Coupon Click the Coupon checkbox to define a list of coupon codes. If a customer presents one of the coupon codes at POS, the rule is validated.
Customer Click the Customer checkbox to define a customer filter. If a Bill To customer that matches the entered criteria is entered on the transaction, the rule is validated.

Reward Rules for BOGOs
When creating Reward Rules, create an Item Filter that specifies the Item(s) to which the specified Discount will be applied. By default, the Item Qty is set to 1. This means the discount is applied only to the first unit. If you set the Item Qty to 2, the discount is applied to each of the first two units listed, but not the third, fourth, etc.

Option Description
BOGO Discount This checkbox is selected and set to read-only.
Sort Order See the detailed section on Sort Order.
Spread discount to all BOGO items

The "Spread discount to all BOGO items" option on the Reward Rules screen enables you to spread the promotion discount amount across all the items on the transaction that are included in the promotion. This option is displayed on the Reward Rules section, right under the Sort Order dropdown. The process takes the discount total for the BOGO rewards and then spreads that amount to discount each of the items involved in the promotion (buy and get). The discounts are applied like regular item discounts issued by Promos. There will not be a ‘spread' source on the discounts.
About Item Filters in Validation Rules and Reward Rules
The items selected using the Item Filter for Validation Rules are the items that must be purchased to qualify for the promotion. The items selected using the Item Filter for Reward Rules are the items that receive (get) a discount when the Validation Rule items are purchased. The "Spread discount to all BOGO items" option essentially treats the items selected by the Item Filters in Validation Rules and Reward Rules the same when it comes to spreading BOGO promotion discounts.

Item Filter Click the Item Filter button to define a filter that determines the items that will receive a discount.
Item Qty For the items selected by the Item Filter, the quantity of each item that will receive the discount
Discount Type

Select the desired discount type: Disc % (default), Disc $, Price, or Price Level (PL) Price.

Discount Value Enter the discount amount, discount percentage, or Price that the items selected by the Item Filter will receive. If PL Price is selected as the Discount Type, then the Discount Value field becomes a drop-down from which users must select the desired price level that will be used to set the discount price.

Sort Order
The BOGO Discount Reward area has a drop-down setting for "Sort Order".  The available values are Optimized (default), Highest and Lowest.  This setting determines which applicable items are discounted first, sorted by Price.  In the case of Optimized sorting, the reward items are assured to be equal or lesser value than any validation items.

  • Highest: Always applies the BOGO discount to the highest-priced eligible item (more to the benefit of the customer).
  • Lowest: Applies the discount to the lowest-priced eligible item (more to the benefit of the retailer).
  • Optimized: The Optimized setting will validate the BOGO using the highest-priced item, and then apply the BOGO discount to the next-highest-priced item. This matches the most common intent of a BOGO promotion, which can be summed up as "Buy item X and get a discount for item Y of equal or lower price."

How the "Optimized" Setting Works
As items are added to the transaction, Prism sorts the items by price and identifies the highest-priced item included in the promo with a quantity that meets the promo requirements. It stops at the first item that meets the criteria.

  1. Prism continues down the list and identifies the next-highest-priced item that is included in the promo with a quantity that meets the promo requirements.
  2. Prism marks the Buy Items and applies a discount to the Get Items.
  3. If "Apply Once" is NOT selected, then the process repeats; however, the previously used Buy and Get items will be ignored.
  4. The process stops when there are no more items to which the BOGO can be applied.

How Validation Rules Sort Order and Reward Rules Sort Order Work Together
The Sort Order drop-down is available on both Validation Rules and Reward Rules. The following examples show how the Validation Rules Sort Order and Reward Rules Sort Order work together.

Non-Traditional BOGO - Weekly Special Deals
An electronics store sends out an email flyer each week with a list of special prices on certain items. To implement this promotion, set up a BOGO and add a rule for each item and its price.
