Genius Mini
This topic has information about using the Global Payments Genius Mini device with Prism. The Genius Mini connects to an iPhone, iPod or iPad, bringing maximum mobility to the Prism POS environment.
The Genius Mini device comes in two versions: A headphone-jack version and a Bluetooth version. You can attach the Genius Mini Device to the iOS device using the headphone jack or a connector like the Apple headphone-jack-to-Lightning connector.
Limitations
- Can be used with iPad mini, iPod Touch 6th Gen, and iPhone 6
- No line item display mode
- No transactions that require entry of a PIN (e.g. debit and EMV PIN)
- For gift cards, only redemptions are allowed (activation and add value transactions are not allowed)
- A workstation can only have one Genius device at a time; to add a different device, you must first remove the existing device's configuration
- Requires use of Portrait Layouts (Prism Node Preferences > Themes and Layouts)
- The Genius Mini only handles credit cards and gift cards are allowed. Debit cards are not allowed (the regular Genius device allows debit cards).
- When using the Genius Mini, the user has only the iPhone screen for user interaction. When using the regular Genius device, the user has access to both the iOS device screen and the PC screen.
Basic Steps for using Genius Mini with Prism
(The basic steps are explained in more detail in the sections that follow)
1. Download the RP Prism iOS launcher and the Cayan Genius Mini app and install on iOS devices as needed.
2. Select Genius as the EFT provider in Node Preferences > Transactions > EFT.
3. Edit the Workstation record of each Proxy and iOS device where the Genius Mini will be used. Select the "Use Genius Mini" checkbox in the HAL Preferences area.
4. Create transactions using the RP Prism app on the iOS device. When tendering transactions, select the "Swipe" option and swipe the card through the Genius Mini's integrated card reader. Alternatively, enter transaction details via manual entry using the Genius web transport interface.
When you press the Take button on the Prism tender screen, Prism establishes a link with the Genius app. From here, you have a choice about how to proceed. A pop-up menu displays three options: Swipe, Keyed Credit, or Bypass Device.
Option | Description |
---|---|
Swipe | Readies the Genius Mini for a card swipe. When you select Swipe, swipe the card through the integrated card reader. The card info is entered on the transaction. Assuming the entire transaction amount is covered by the card transaction, you can then print/update the transaction. Typically, this is the option you want to select, unless there is a reason for selecting one of the other options described below. |
Keyed Credit | Indicates that you want to enter credit card information manually via the Genius Device. In this case, the Genius app displays a special screen and you can use the iOS device's keyboard to manually enter the card information. If you click this option while the tender type is set to gift card, you are saying that you want to change the tender type from gift card to credit card. |
Bypass Device | Indicates that you want to send the transaction information over Global Payments' proprietary transport protocol. The information that a user is required to enter varies slightly from the info required when the Keyed Credit option is selected. When you finish entering information in the web form, click Submit. You will then go to the web transport method where manual entry is required. |
Step 1. Download Prism iOS Launcher and Cayan Genius Mini apps and install on iOS devices

Step 2. Select Genius as EFT provider (Node Preferences > Transactions > EFT)
Navigate to the Admin Console. Select Node Preferences > Transactions > EFT. In the "Select EFT Provider" dropdown, select Cayan/Genius and enter your merchant Name, ID and Key. For the endpoint addresses, you can click the button to Load Default Addresses, or manually edit endpoint IP addresses, if needed.
Step 3. Edit Workstation Records of Proxy and iOS Device
Prism uses a Proxy to facilitate communication between Prism clients and hardware devices like printers. When using iOS devices with Prism, you should make sure both the Proxy workstation record and the iOS device workstation record are configured correctly. In our example, we will show sample HAL settings configuration for a Prism Proxy workstation and an iOS device workstation
Edit Proxy Workstation
Drill down to the list of workstations. Find the Proxy workstation. Double-click on the workstation to make sure you have drilled down to the final level.
Click the Edit button for the Proxy workstation. Click the HAL Settings tab. Select the workstation from the dropdown. Click the Genius Device tab. Select the "Use Genius Mini" checkbox. Activating the use of Genius Mini in Workstation HAL settings, automatically disables Debit Card functionality. Even if you have Debit Cards enabled as a tender in the Tender Requirements area of preferences, if the system is configured to use the Genius Mini you will not see a Debit Card button when selecting a Tender Type.
When you select the use Genius Mini checkbox, the Add Genius Device button is disabled.
Click Exit to close the Workstation record.
Credit Card Transactions
Select Credit Card as the Tender Type.
Click the Take button.
When you click the Take button, a pop-up menu is displayed in Prism that lists three methods for entering card information: Swipe, Keyed Credit and Bypass Device.
Swipe
The default method is swipe. When a user clicks the Take button on the tender screen, control automatically shifts to the Genius device so the user doesn't have to click the Swipe button. A screen like the one shown below is displayed. Swipe or insert the card through the Genius Mini card reader. The transaction is sent to Global Payments for processing. (Note: If you want to use a different entry method than swipe, use the pop-up menu on the Prism screen to switch to Keyed Credit or Bypass Device.)
If a signature is required, have the customer sign.
When the payment is approved, control returns to Prism where the user can print and update the transaction.
Keyed Credit
Certain retailers do not want employees to handle customer credit cards. These retailers can use a Global Payments feature that allows for fully manual card processing in which the customer enters card information directly into the CED.
This option is only available for credit cards and it is not available when using Auth and Settle. If you select Keyed Credit, a screen like the one below is displayed. Enter the credit card info and click Next. When you click Next, the transaction is sent to Global Payments for processing.
Bypass Device
Bypass Device indicates that you want to send the transaction information over Global Payments' proprietary transport protocol. A screen like the one below is displayed. DO NOT SWIPE THE CARD ON THIS SCREEN. Instead, click "Click here to key in card information."
When you click "Click here to key in card information," the Web Form is displayed. Enter card details and click Submit.

If you check the card's balance, the updated balance is shown.
Redeem a Gift Card
With the Genius Mini, after the user clicks the Take button, the "Swipe/Keyed Credit/Bypass Device" menu pops up and the user must select an option to continue. After selection, control shifts to the Genius Mini. In an environment with a PC connected to a regular Genius device, when the user clicks the Take button, control shifts to the Genius screen. but the user still has access to the "Swipe/Keyed Credit/Bypass Device" menu on the screen of the PC. With the Genius Mini, there is only one screen (the iOS device screen) so the user must select from the pop-up menu first.
Select a method for entering the card number:
Swipe
If you select Swipe, the transaction is sent to the Genius Mini device. Swipe or insert the card through the Genius Mini card reader. The transaction is sent to Global Payments for processing.
Keyed Credit
The Keyed Credit option is only available for credit cards. If you select Keyed Credit, you are saying that you want to change the Tender Type from gift card to credit card.
Bypass Device
Bypass Device indicates that you want to send the transaction information over Global Payments' proprietary transport protocol. A screen like the one below is displayed. DO NOT SWIPE THE CARD ON THIS SCREEN. Instead, click "Click here to key in card information."
When you click the link, a modal like the one shown below is displayed. Type the card information.
Click Submit. The payment is processed. If the transaction is approved, you will see an Approved message.

Forced Authorization
(Credit card only)
There are two possible paths a user can take to perform a Force Authorization:
- The Merchant asks the customer to enter card information directly into the Genius device
- The Merchant enters card information in the Web Form
If your business practices call for customers to manually enter card information into the CED during a Force Authorization, it is important to NOT SWIPE THE CARD. If you do a Forced Auth over the CED and swipe the card, it will result in a ‘Regular' Sale, and the Auth Code entered by the user will be ignored. If a Forced Authorization is required and the merchant wants to use the CED, the user must select the ‘Keyed Credit' button in RP Prism after the transaction is sent to the CED.
