Node Preferences - Transactions - Serial and Lot Numbers

Serial numbers and lot numbers enable you to track individual units of merchandise from the time the shipment arrives through purchase by the customer.
A serial number is a unique code that identifies otherwise identical individual units from a single manufacturer. A serial number does not have to be only numbers; it can include letters, underscores, etc. Serial numbers are a deterrent against theft and counterfeit products.
A lot number is an identification number assigned to a quantity or batch of a product from a single manufacturer. Lot numbers enable the manufacturer to trace a product back through the production process to the source of the materials.  Lot numbers can typically be found on the outside of packaging. A lot number is different from a product's UPC (SKU). A lot number often has an expiration date that is used to determine the shelf life of the product.

About Full vs Partial Control
To understand the settings in the Serial and Lot Numbers area of preferences, it's important to understand the difference between "full control" and "partial control" when it comes to serial and lot number items.
When a full control item is entered on a document, entry of a serial or lot number is required. For example, if you list a serial number item with a quantity of "3" then the user must enter three unique serial numbers, one for each unit.
When a partial control item is entered on a document, entry of a serial or lot number is optional. However, retailers sometimes want a prompt to be displayed to the user anyway, even if entry is optional, and that's what the options in the Serial and Lot Numbers area of preferences are for.
Serial Number Tracking
In the Serial Numbers area of the preferences (left side), select the individual item types (sale, return, order, send sale, voucher, slip, memo) for which a Serial Number Entry prompt will be displayed.
Prevent sale of Full Control Serial Number items with zero quantity
In Prism 2.3 and later, the "Prevent Sale of Full Control Serial Number items with zero quantity" preference when enabled prevents the sale of full-control serial number items if the number has a zero OH Qty. Enabling this preference can help prevent serial numbers from going into a negative OH Qty. If "Prevent sale of Full Control Serial Number items with zero quantity" is enabled, a full-control serial number item must have a positive OH Qty value for the number to be sold. Adding a full-control serial number with an OH Qty of zero results in a red toast message explaining the number is not available and the entry will be cleared.
Lot Number Tracking
In the Lot Numbers area, you have the same item types available as for Serial Numbers; however, instead of a checkbox there is a drop-down list with the following options:
None: If selected, when a lot number item is entered, no prompt will be displayed; entry of a number is optional.
Prompt: If selected, when a lot number item is entered, a Lot Number Entry prompt will be displayed; however, entry of a number is optional.
Prompt and Require: If selected, when a lot number item is entered, a Lot Number Entry prompt will be displayed to the user and entry of a number is required.
