Prism Oracle 19c Upgrade
1 Introduction
1.1 Basic Steps for Upgrading from Oracle 12c to 19c
1. Download the files for the current version of Prism from https://my.retailpro.com/Solutions/RPPrism/Downloads/
2. Before the upgrade:
- Create a complete backup of the 12c database. This Oracle 12c backup protects your data in case of a catastrophic interruption while the Oracle 19c upgrade is in progress.
- Verify the system meets the recommended requirements considering the amount of data, features used, etc.
3. Install the Prism Oracle 19c Database. (Oracle19cInstaller.exe v1.1.2.7)
4. Install the current version of Prism. Select the option to install Prism Server for Oracle 19c.
5. After the upgrade:
- Create a complete backup of the 19c database.
- If the original Oracle 12c system was Retail Pro 9/RIL, run PrismCMSRemovalTool.exe.
1.2 Best Practices for Successful Upgrade
1.2.1 Ensure the environment meets hardware requirements
Size the environment based on the workload, anticipated data volume, and the features intended for use. Do not rely solely on the minimum requirements for installation.
If upgrading from 1.14.7 to the current version of Prism AND upgrading to Oracle 19c:
1. Upgrade Prism from 1.14.7 to the current version of Prism.
2. Configure the system for new features, permissions and resources.
3. Upgrade the database from Oracle 12c to 19c.
1.2.2 Requirements for Systems that Hosted V9
If the system being upgraded hosted V9, ideally you should install a new Oracle 19c DB on a new system, but this will not always be feasible. In that case, you should:
- Disable the v9 services and remove v9 executables. If the V9 services and executables are left as is, they will continue to run and may present errors when unable to connect to the upgraded Oracle DB. This could cause unexpected problems.
- Run PrismCMSRemovalTool.exe after the upgrade to 19c.
1.2.2 Review installation logs, address all warnings and errors
In the event of any installation issues, log files (e.g., installActions.log, oraInstall.err) will help identify the root cause. Each warning or error often indicates an underlying issue that will impact database stability or performance post-installation. Addressing these issues before proceeding ensures a more robust and reliable deployment.
1.2.4 Upgrading systems already on a Prism version that supports 19c
If the system is already on a Prism version that supports Oracle 19c and you want to stay on that same supported Prism version, after upgrading the Oracle database run the "Prism Server for Oracle 19c" installer for that version over-the-top. This is necessary to make sure all the services start correctly.
1.2.5 Replication between Prism on Oracle 12c and 19c Systems
You don't have to upgrade all systems to Oracle 19c at once. Replication will work as long as systems are on same Prism version (e.g., 2.5), such that a Prism Oracle 12c system can replicate data with a Prism Oracle 19c system.
1.3 Limitations/Requirements
- The user who is logged in to run the Installer must be local to the SERVER with Administrator privileges, NOT a user local to the DOMAIN.
- You cannot install Prism Server for Oracle 19c on a DOMAIN server.
- If the original install on the system is Retail Pro 9/RIL, run the PrismCMSRemovalTool.exe after the upgrade or problems with patches will result.
- The upgrade to 19c may have unexpected results on customizations, depending on the type of customization. If you are using customizations, especially those that involve any moving of Oracle files, consult with Retail Pro Project Services or Technical Services before upgrading to 19c.
- The Oracle edition (Standard or Enterprise) must remain the same. For example, you cannot upgrade a 12c standard to 19c enterprise.
- This Oracle 19c upgrade only applies to the currently supported Retail Pro Prism system. This Oracle 19c upgrade does not apply to systems using a legacy version of Retail Pro (e.g., RP9.x). Legacy systems must first use the Data Migration Tool (DMT) or other means to get data into a currently supported release of Prism.
- Oracle 19c Enterprise Edition requires more resources than the 12c Enterprise Edition. Consult Oracle for recommendations.
- Krunch users: You must download and install the latest version of Krunch (currently 15.0.2). In addition, after the upgrade go into Krunch > "Administrator Setup" > "Database" and SAVE the settings again. This action will allow Krunch to detect the Oracle 19c database and connect to it.
- Accounting Link users: You must install the latest version of Accounting Link (currently 2.4.1.12).
- Oracle folders will be deleted, including the folder that is the default location for backups. For this reason, ensure that your most recent Oracle 12c backups are stored elsewhere than the system being upgraded.
- Before upgrading Prism 1.14.7 or older, you must first uninstall the DRS application.
- Retail Pro 9 will no longer work after the upgrade to 19c.
- Hostnames can be a maximum of 15 characters.
- You can only upgrade Oracle from 12c to 19c on the same drive. If you require a new drive due to disk space, etc., first clone the 12c DB to the new drive, then upgrade to 19c on that drive.
2 Before the Upgrade
2.1 Create a Complete Backup of the Oracle 12c Database
Note: You can find detailed information about Prism Backup and Recovery at the following my.retailpro.com link:
https://my.retailpro.com/Documentation/?p=4&bookid=16&documentid=309&chapterid=16
2.1.1 Access the Database Backup Tool
1. Log in to Prism Tech Toolkit.
2. Navigate to Data Utilities > Backup & Restore > Database Backup Tool.
3. Select a configuration and enter a Set Name.
4. Click Run Backup.
5. When finished, copy the backup set to a different machine or location for safekeeping. This way, if something catastrophic occurs during the 19c install, you will still have the 12c database.
2.1.2 About the Custom Backup Path
The Custom Backup Path field for Oracle 12c defaults to the c:\oracle\oradata\rproods\archive\ folder. That folder (and other oracle folders) will be deleted when you install Oracle 19c, resulting in the loss of any backups there. To avoid this, change the Custom Backup Path to external storage, or leave the default Custom Backup Path and make sure to copy the backup set elsewhere before upgrading to Oracle 19c.
Default Custom Backup Path for 12c, 19c
12c: c:\oracle\oradata\rproods\archive
19c: c:\oracle\oradata\rpcdb\archive
2.1.3 Oracle 12c Backups are not Compatible with 19c
It is critical to understand that any 12c backups are not compatible with 19c. If anything happens after the successful upgrade, you won't be able to go back to those 12c backups. That is why the first task after successful installation of 19c is to make a complete backup of the 19c database.
2.2 Minimum and Recommended Hardware Requirements

3. Execute the program.
4. A warning is displayed. You are asked to confirm that you want to remove the Oracle DB schema associated with RP9 / RIL. Type YES and press
3.3.1.1 About the PrismCMSRemovalTool.exe
When the Prism Oracle 19c Upgrade was originally introduced, it was found that installing Oracle 19c patches using the original version of the Oracle Patch Installer (OraPatchInstaller.exe) caused unexpected problems.
Example: A user upgrades a V9/RIL Oracle 12c system to Prism 1.14.7 (also Oracle 12c). The user then installs Prism 2.5 and upgrades to Oracle 19c. After installing a patch using the original version of the OraPatchInstaller.exe, the Oracle 19c database would be left in a RESTRICTED SESSION state and could not be used.
The 2.5.3.xxx CCU provides the PrismCMSRemovalTool.exe. The PrismCMSRemovalTool safely and completely removes the remaining Retail Pro 9/RIL CMS schema so that Oracle 19c patches install without problems.
Not all systems require running the PrismCMSRemovalTool.
- If the original install on the system was Retail Pro 9/RIL, run the PrismCMSRemovalTool.exe
- If the original install on the system was Prism Oracle 12c, do not run the PrismCMSRemovalTool.exe
3.4 Warnings, Errors and Log Files
3.4.1 About Warnings and Errors
The Oracle 19c installer checks to make sure the system environment meets the minimum requirements. The installer will issue warnings or errors when needed.
- Warnings Warnings indicate issues that might affect the performance or stability of the database but do not necessarily halt the installation. Even if the installation succeeds, it's a good idea to address the cause of the warning to avoid problems later.
- Errors Errors indicate critical issues that halt the installation and must be resolved before continuing.
Table 2. Example Warnings/Errors and Recommended Actions
| Error/Warning | Example Message | Impact on Install | Typical Cause | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warning | Unexpected error while executing the action at state: 'supportedOSCheck'. | Allows continuation | Minor OS version mismatch or non-critical configuration issue. | Address the problem if possible; otherwise, proceed with caution. |
| Error | Oracle Database is not supported on this operating system. | Halts installation. | Uncertified or incompatible OS version. | Fix the underlying issue and restart installation. |
| Error | failed to set up CVU remote execution framework directory. | Halts installation. | Insufficient administrative permissions or environment setup issues. | Ensure "Run as administrator" is used; check environment variables and permissions. |
| Error | Unknown irrecoverable error. | Halts installation | Generic fatal error, often linked to underlying permission issues or corrupted installation files. | Refer to logs for details |
3.4.2 Installation Log Files
Installation log files are not created automatically. You can create log files by running the Oracle19cInstaller.exe from the command line with the following parameter: /log=path/to/logfile.log
- installActions
.log: This file provides a comprehensive record of all installation actions, including the details of prerequisite checks. - oraInstall
.err: This log specifically captures detailed error messages that occur during the installation. - oraInstall
.out: This file contains general output from the installation. - prerequisite_results.xml: This XML file stores the detailed outcomes of the prerequisite checks.
3.4.3 Firewall Warnings
If a firewall message is displayed during the install, you must acknowledge the message(s) for the process to continue.
4 After the Upgrade
After the successful Oracle 19c upgrade:
- Create a complete backup of the Oracle 19c database. Make a backup of the production database immediately. This step is critical because any existing 12c backups are now invalid. This backup protects the Oracle 19c database in case of system crash or other catastrophic event during the first workday(s) after the upgrade.
- If the original install on this system was Retail Pro 9/RIL, after upgrading to 19c and installing the Prism stack, run the PrismCMSRemovalTool.exe to remove the CMS schema so Oracle patches install without a problem.
4.1 Create a Complete Backup of the Oracle 19c Database
1. Log in to Tech Toolkit and navigate to Data Utilities > Backup & Restore > Database Backup Tool.
2. Select a configuration and enter a Set Name.
3. Click Run Backup.
4. When finished, copy the backup set to a different machine or location.
4.2 (If the original system was RP9/RIL) Run PrismCMSRemovalTool.exe
This tool will safely and completely remove the Retail Pro 9/CMS schema so that Oracle patches install without a problem.
4.3 Best Practices for Oracle Patches
The original configuration in which the retailer installed the Oracle database will dictate the best flow for moving forward with Oracle patches:
- Retail Pro 9/RIL
- Prism Oracle 12c
4.2.1 If original install on this system was Retail Pro 9/RIL
If Retail Pro 9 was used in the past, the schema/data used for that product will be deleted from the Oracle database when upgrading to Oracle 19c. This procedure assumes use of the most current Oracle DB installer (v.1.1.2.7), Oracle Patch Installer (v2.0.0.4) and PrismCMSRemovalTool.
1. Upgrade to Oracle 19c (Ora19cInstaller).
2. Install Prism stack (v2.5.1.22 or above) using the Prism Server for Oracle 19c option.
3. Run PrismCMSRemovalTool.
4. Install Oracle 19c patches.
4.2.2 If original install on this system was Prism Oracle12c
1. Upgrade to Oracle 19c (Ora19cInstaller).
2. Install Prism stack (v2.5.1.22 or above) using the Prism Server for Oracle 19c option.
3. Install Oracle 19c patches.
4.3 Uninstall Oracle
If you need to uninstall Oracle 19c, use the Windows Add/Remove Programs feature.
4.4 Known Issues
The following table lists known issues related to the Prism Oracle 19c Upgrade:
| Issue # | Description |
|---|---|
| 29541 | Hostnames are currently limited to 15 characters. |
| 29459 | When upgrading from 12c the install should allow upgrading to a different drive. |
| 29465 | You cannot use the Proxy when Prism Server for Oracle 19c is installed on a DOMAIN Server. |
