Using the Janam XP20/30 Handheld devices in 64-bit Windows environments

Janam XP20/30 USB/Serial Windows 64-bit Installation Instructions

This document includes additional instructions for installing a Janam XP20/30 handheld devices with Serial or USB type connection in Windows 64-bit environments. This information is in addition our to regular Janam documentation. That documentation can be found on our documentation portal:

General Notes:

• All instructions below assume a clean installation with a Janam device that has been reset to factory defaults. Please perform a hard reset on your Janam unit before proceeding. For information on how to do this, please refer to the Janam documentation on the Documentation Portal on the Partner Website.
• For all installs, the current version of the Palm Utilities software was used, as available on the Retail Pro Partner website, currently named Palm103108.zip
• This installation method has been tested on Windows 2003 Server SP2 64-bit and Windows 7 SP1 64-bit operating Systems ONLY. No other 64-bit versions of Windows have been tested.
• The following instructions include a file to make modifications to the Windows registry in order for the Palm Utilities to work on Windows 64-bit. Executing this file could possibly render your Windows Operating System unusable. If you are uncertain with regards to this modification, DO NOT proceed. Retail Pro International LLC shall not be liable for any incorrectly executed modifications. Before making any modifications to the registry, you are strongly advised to make a backup of the Registry and/or create a Windows Restore Point in case of unforeseen unpleasant results.

Serial connected Janam

Installation Steps:

Installing the Janam XP20/30 handheld devices connected via Serial on 64-bit Windows Operating systems requires a slightly different installation procedure than 32-bit Windows platforms.

Step 1: Follow the basic installation instructions on the Documentation Portal for the Janam and install the Palm utilities. You can create the Palm user as instructed in the documentation and load the Palm/Janam apps for the Palm user, but DO NOT try to Sync yet to install the Janam apps on the handheld device.
Step 2: After you have installed the Palm Utilities, you should have a Hotsync icon in your system tray. Right click on the icon, click on ?Custom?. Select ?System?, then ?Change?.Select ?Do Nothing? and check the ?Default? checkbox.

Click ?OK?, then ?Done?.

Step 3: Extract only the attached Janam_64-bitfix.zip file to a location on your computer. There should be 1 file after extraction (Janam_64-bitfix.reg). Double-click on the file. Acknowledge the warning, then click OK.

This will make a small registry modification to make the Palm utilities work in a 64-bit environment.

You should be able to run Hotsync now without issues.

USB connected Janam

Disclaimer: This 64-bit USB driver for the Janam handheld devices was not written by Retail Pro International LLC. Retail Pro has merely modified the driver?s .inf file to include the Janam handheld device. This .inf file holds instructions for the Operating System on how to install the driver for each given device. It has been found to work on the above mentioned Operating Systems. The driver was originally written by Aceeca. (http://www.aceeca.com).

Installation Steps:

Installing the Janam XP20/30 handheld devices connected via USB on 64-bit Operating Systems requires a few modifications to the standard installation procedures of the Palm Utilities as described in the documentation on the Documentation Portal on the Partner Website. This has to do with the way the USB driver must be installed. Below are the steps to complete the installation.

Step 1: Follow the basic installation instructions on the Documentation Portal for the Janam and install the Palm utilities. You can create the Palm user as instructed in the documentation and load the Palm/Janam apps for the Palm user, but DO NOT try to Sync yet to install the Janam apps on the handheld device.

Step 2: After you have installed the Palm Utilities, you should have a Hotsync icon in your system tray (looks something like ). Right-click on the icon and double check that the connection is set to ?Local USB?. If it is not, make it so (uncheck ?Local Serial? and check ?Local USB?).

Step 3: Right-click on the Hotsync icon again. Click on ?Custom?. Select ?System?, then ?Change?. Select ?Do Nothing? and check the ?Default? checkbox.

Click ?OK?, then ?Done?.

Step 4: Extract the attached file 64-bit USB file (Janam_64-bit-USBdriver.zip) to a location on your computer. There should be 5 files after extraction. They include the 64-bit USB driver and a file to modify the registry.

Step 5: Go into the directory where you unpacked the Janam 64-bit files. In there, you will find a file called ?Janam_64bitfix.reg?. Double-click on the file. Acknowledge the warning, then click OK.

This will make a small registry modification to make the Palm utilities work in a 64-bit environment.

Step 6:Open Device Manager. Your Janam handheld will ONLY show up in the device list while Hotsync is exchanging information, and you have to open the properties of the (unknown) Device while it shows up.

To open the Device Manager, right-click ?Computer? on your Desktop, ?Properties?, then ?Device Manager?. Keep this screen open during the following step.

Step 7: Press the Hotsync button on your Janam cradle. It should be trying to connect to your desktop and you should see it appear in the Device Manager. It will show up with a Yellow checkmark, as Windows doesn?t have a driver for that USB device.

Right-click on the ?unknown? Device, and click on ?Properties?. Click on ?Update driver?. Select ?Browse my computer for driver Software?, and browse for the directory where you extracted the attached file. Click ?Next?. It should show you the device as ?Janam Handheld?. Finish the USB driver install.

At this point, Hotsync should be continuing installing the apps on your Janam/Palm. If it doesn?t, press the Hotsync button again on the cradle.
